The 8th of February is a date that should be penned into any hip hop head's diary. After a 13 year hiatus, Gil Scott-Heron returns to the public eye with the release of his latest album; 'I'm New Here'.
Widely accepted to have influenced and inspired the evolution of hip hop music since the 1970's, the musician, writer and poet's impending 'comeback' (I use the term loosely) has been creating quite a buzz, and rightly so. His previous work has always shown a depth and artistic integrity that can too often be a struggle to find nowadays. He has always stated that his being a musician (a member of the band; 'Black & Blues') before pursuing his interest in poetry allowed him to achieve this.
The first single off 'I'm New Here' is entitled 'Me And The Devil'. The video is below. It is a long way from Scott-Heron's original funk and soul sound. It's darker, eerie synths coupled with rough, almost groaning vocals.
