This week's post does not concern an up and coming release date, nor does it relate to any breaking headlines in the world of hip hop. It's a selfish and shameful affair, as I abuse my position of power and look back to last year, rather than looking forward to the future and promoting 'new music'.
This quite blatant insubordination was brought on early this week during a sadly all to frequent occurrence of procrastination, better known as aimless web surfing. Whilst jumping from one monotonous web page to another I came upon a news story that caught my eye. It concerned New York rapper Cage. Apparently the actor Shia LaBeouf is a big fan and wants to make a film about the underground MC's life (a tragic tale of both physical abuse and drug abuse, mistreatment at a New York psychiatric hospital and suicide attempts). I admit that this should really be of no interest to us, as at the new music blogcast we are concerned with music, not film. However, after reading the story I realised that it had been a while since I had given my Cage iTunes playlist any attention. I therefore broke out my iPod, uploaded Cage's latest album; 'Depart From Me', and immersed myself in it during a solid afternoon down the gym.
'Depart From Me' was released last summer, but seeing as the blogcast was not up and running then, I am going to give it a bit of promotion and exposure here. It is severely personal, both the lyrics and beats seem to hold firm and resonate within you. The drum lines are heavy, offset with rough guitar rifts, creating a rock/rap fusion of sorts. The 15 tracks switch between different tempo's and feature production from fellow Definitive Jux label mates, Aesop Rock and El P, as well as Cage himself.
Bellow is what was the first single from the record. It's called 'I Never Knew You'.
Take care,
Noodle
